REAL NAME

Kyle Kratky

AGE

26

LOCATION

Greater St. Louis area

CHILDHOOD HERO

Gandalf the Grey.

OCCUPATION

I’m a definite jack of many trades.  I write, perform in and direct plays.  I gather other people’s spoken stories in an attempt to get on the radio.  I am an executive assistant at a local HIV/AIDS housing organization.  I freelance in a number of other ways.

GARDENING EXPERIENCE

When I was a child I had a little garden on the hill at my house.  I grew beans well and failed at carrots and potatoes.  I didn’t do much with it, and I think my parents really did the hard work.  More recently, I’ve just tended a small herb garden.

WHAT I WANT TO DO

Grow produce and herbs that I will use to cook.  I cook quite a lot, and most of what I do is traditional Italian or modern fusion.  I’m not into preserving and canning, so I won’t be shooting for an excess. I’ll be gardening from a raised bed I’ve built.

WHAT I’M PLANTING

I’ll do an initial planting, then a succession planting (mid-summer, probably), then a late planting of things I’ll over-winter.  I am growing:

  • Swiss chard
  • Collard
  • Onions
  • Carrots
  • Peppers (hot, red, green)
  • Potatoes (Yukon gold)
  • Bush beans
  • Tomatoes
  • Garlic
  • Broccoli
  • Cilantro
  • Sage
  • Basil
  • Oregano
  • Chives
  • Blackberries
  • Blueberries
  • WHAT IT HAS COST

    • Frame for raised bed: $105.38.
    • Soil for raised bed: $127.29
    • Seeds: Will calculate soon.
    • Plants: Will calculate soon.
    • Garden tools and equipment: $79.61
    • Other materials/needs: None yet.
    • TOTAL: $312.28

    MY HARVESTS:

    • 8 oregano sprigs (10-15 leaves per sprig?)
    • 12 cilantro sprigs (1 leaf per sprig?)
    • 25 basil leaves
    • 8 baby swiss chard leaves
    • 19 radishes (+ radish greens)
    • 26 chard leaves (not sure how to count these, since they keep growing)
